Sports is a good social activity that brings people together in a positive way. Competitions and rivalries may be formed but, at the end of it all, the sight of the two opposing teams shaking their hands in camaraderie is such a heart-warming image that it remains in the minds of those who have witnessed the event. Yet, in truth, inculcating the value of sportsmanship in an athlete is a job that many coaches and advisers consider difficult.
By giving verbal inputs to the team's roster on the importance of being a sportsman, a coach actually introduces the athletes to the mental side of the game they love. The players might be passionate and talented in the contest, but if they show uncharacteristic behaviour, the team will lose the support of their fans and demoralise them. So, to prevent this, there are some things you have to remind each member of the squad. First, each individual in the roster should learn to respect the coach's decision especially when the whole unit is in the middle of a fierce contest. If you do not agree with the coach's strategies, calmly talk to him and drive your point across in a civilised manner. Next, teach the group to encourage the underachievers in the team and remind each of their respective struggle to be at the top of their game. Finally, remind them about winning and losing gracefully - to accept defeat like gentlemen and to celebrate with dignity.
